Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

With 70% of the earth being covered with water and 97% of that being salt water in the oceans it’s hardly surprising that we have always been interested in what’s under the seas. Diving suits with varying degrees of suitability have been around from medieval times but it was on this day in 1771 that Louis Norcross patented the first diving suit with the first closed helmet and watertight suit. He was to get more volunteers than some of the previous efforts and his basic design is still used today.

Maybe if he’d tried wearing a diving suit Charles Osborne would have got rid of his hiccups earlier. It was on this day in 1922 that the unfortunate chap started his hiccupping bout and it was to last for another 68 years! He learned to cope with it and in fact managed to marry twice. He stopped hiccupping before he died but as far as I know didn’t tell anyone how he did it! That would have been worth a fortune, Charles!

The entertainment business gets our attention next with “You Only Live Twice” premiering in New York on this day in 1967. Sean Connery starred as James Bond and it was to be his penultimate performance of the character.

The Beatles
Long and Winding Road” and “Let It Be” were to hit #1 spots in the charts on this day in 1970.

And not to be left out Mungo Jerry’s “In The Summertime” made the same spot on the same day. Don’t ask, because I don’t know!

Ten years later this day in 1980 saw the premier of Debbie Harry’s and Meatloaf’s film “Roadie”. And Billy Joel’s “Glass Houses” hit #1 on the same day.

On a day that seems not to have been a popular day to be born for interesting personalities Mary Whitehouse (1910 – 2001) is our sole representative. This courageous and well meaning lady started her one woman crusade to clean up TV starting in the 1960’s and continued the campaign all her life. The Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, and the Director General of the BBC, Sir Hugh Green, were her first targets. Her letters to Downing Street were apparently so difficult to reply to that the civil servants managed to “lose” most of them; and Hugh Greene would never let her anywhere near the BBC cameras! Although she was out of touch with the real world she has to be acknowledged as being a woman of principle and dedicated to her cause, even if it was lost before she started.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
