Gemstone of the Month

Amethyst

Flower of the Month: Violet

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

It was on this day in 1969 that the first test flight of the Boeing 747 took place. The plane would go on to be used commercially in 1970 and it held the record for the plane able to take the highest number of passengers for 37 years. At the time of its development Boeing only expected that the plane would have a production life of 400 units. As of October last year 1,409 planes had been produced and the next version of the plane, the 747 – 8, is scheduled to go into service in 2010! Nice work if you can get it!

The group, Fleetwood Mac, will remember this day in 1977 when they released their 13th album called “Rumours”. It would go on to become the best selling album of 1977 with over 8 million sales, and staying at the album #1 spot for 31 weeks. This track is one of Nomanda’s favourites from the album.

On this same day in 1985 that the Coca Cola Company choose to introduce “Cherry Coke” to the unsuspecting public, Mickey Mouse was being welcomed to China! I like Mickey Mouse and am not too keen on “Cherry Coke”. I reckon the Chinese got the best part of the deal that day!

I think we are really lucky when some of the great sportsmen and women hang up their boots and continue their careers commentating for us on TV. There are many who have followed this path and one who would go on to be a sports commentator for the BBC, Linford Christie, on this day in 1995 was sprinting his way into the record books. He managed to run the world indoor 200 metre record at 20.25 seconds and not content with that he managed to pick up the European 60 metre record at 6.47 seconds on the same day!

Our first birthday celebrity to day is the “bad guyLee Marvin (1924 – 1987). He was a great actor as a baddie, but his fans will never forget his “Wandering Star” from the film “Paint Your Wagon”. I just love his gravely voice! Brilliant!

Our last birthday boy, Bobby Rogers (1940) believes in miracles and has “Really Got a Hold on Me”!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

12 January - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Carnation

Gemstone of the Month: Garnet

When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The first supermarket in the UK opened on this day as far back as 1948. It was the death knell for the traditional specialist shops with the owner, decked out in his brown or white coat serving you individually and looking after your every need! Come on that’s a load of old fashioned nonsense as aptly characterised by our good friend “Arkwright” who is after every penny he can get his greedy hands on! Happily there is still a place, albeit diminishing, for the small specialist shops. To be perfectly honest there aren’t many of us who would want to spend the time trudging from small shop to shop when we can get it all at one place at the wonderful supermarket! They make far too much money though!

The aeroplane that was to be the super model for generations, the Boeing 747, made its maiden flight on this day in 1970. Nomanda has been on a few of these in his time but sadly not spent too many flights on the “upper deck”!

I’m sure the cast of “Dynasty” only travel first class so let’s raise a glass of the sparkling stuff to them on this day that marks their anniversary (1981).

The evergreen TV presenter Michael Aspel (1933) will no doubt be having a glass or two of the sparkly stuff at his birthday bash today. Nomanda loved his presentation of the “Antiques Roadshow”.

Later to be overshadowed by some of the singers like Rod Stewart and Elton John that accompanied him on his gigs, Long John Baldry (1941 – 2005) is our next birthday celebrity. He was a great singer and this is one of Nomanda’s favourites!

The brilliant captain of the English rugby team in the late ‘80’s and ‘90’s, Will Carling (1965) is our last birthday guest. He is the guy who took the English game to the professional level it is at today although in his time they had a bit more success than recently! I wonder if he’ll be having a glass of his namesake at his bash today, or will he stick to the good stuff?

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
