Upcoming Special Days

14 July - Emmeline Pankhurst Day

15 July - St. Swithin’s Day

If you like the $ sign and all the numbers that follow it then join in today and celebrate the anniversary on the US Dollar which was adopted by Congress on this day in 1785, together with a decimal coinage. The dollar has done pretty well since being the unit of currency used in most international transactions and several countries outside of the US use the US dollar as their official currency. In 2005 there were $760 billion in circulation with an estimated half to two thirds being held outside of the US. However, as of December 2006, the dollar was surpassed by the euro in terms of combined value of cash in circulation. Since then the current value of euro cash in circulation has risen to more than €695 billion, equivalent to US$1.029 trillion at current exchange rates. Nomanda has a 2 dollar bill which I understand is quite rare!

If you have trouble sleeping at nights thinking about all your dollars or euros then I guess that at some time you have taken a cup of Horlik’s before bedtime to see if it helps you sleep better. It’s a drink you either love or hate and it was first marketed by Horlock’s of Wisconsin on this day in 1886. Nomanda is quite partial to a cup of Horlicks. I don’t know whether it helps me to sleep better, I just love the creamy milky taste with loads of sugar just for that extra indulgence!

I know that communications are sometimes a lot more difficult than one may imagine, especially during war time, but a seemingly classic cock up occurred on this day in 1944 when the great French General, General de Gaulle arrived in Washington and on the same day the great American General, General Patton landed in France! Maybe they didn’t want to meet each other!

Happy to meet up, the Beatles were premiering the film from the song “Hard Day’s Night” on this day in 1964.

Just one year later one of the most popular groups of the ‘60’s, Jefferson Airplane, was formed on this day in 1965. Psycadelic stuff at its best let’s have a listen to two of their best songs “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit”.

And pulling a white rabit from his multi talented hat, Mick Jagger began filming on “Ned Kelly” on this day in 1969.

Whites only” used to be the dress code at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship but I’ve noticed that the rules have been relaxed of late. However it was on this day in 1986, celebrating the 100th Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final, that Boris Becker successfully defended the title he won the previous year at the age of just 17. The previous year he was unseeded but this time he beat Ivan Lendl in the final (6-4 6-3 7-5). He was to go on to win 7 Grand Slam titles and 49 titles throughout his career. He is now an entertaining commentor on the game.

First up for birthday honours today is the macho super hero Sylvester Stallone (1946). His franchise for the characters “Rocky” and “Rambo” have made his fame and fortune.

One of “Charlie’s Angels”, Shelley Hack, was born on this day in 1949. Now retired from acting she brought a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people when she was.

Another lady who brings a lot of pleasure and fun into people’s lives, Jennifer Saunders was born on this day in 1958. If you haven’t seen “French and Saunders” or “Absolutely Fabulous” you haven’t lived!

Bringing a different kind of enjoyment into people’s lives the rapper Curtis Jackson, better known as “50 cents” was born on this day in 1975. That’s about as much as Nomanda would pay to see him, but then I’m not everyone!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
