Upcoming Special Days
14 July - Emmeline Pankhurst Day
15 July - St. Swithin’s Day
The 4th July – Independence Day for our colonial cousins in the US. It was on this day in 1776 that George Washington signed the Declaration for Independence from Great Britain. It was to take a further 7 years before it all happened, but it did and now look at them! God Bless America!
Today is also a very special for little girls everywhere as it was on this day in 1865 that the first edition of “Alice in Wonderland” was published. The background to how the book came to be written is as curious as the book itself. Three years earlier the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pseudonym Lewis Carroll) and a friend were rowing three little girls on the river at Oxford. To while away the time the Reverend made up a story of a bored little girl called Alice who goes off in search of adventure! One of the little girls being rowed up the river, Alice Liddell, prevailed upon the Reverend to write down the story and voila! The book has never been out of print since and has been translated into 125 different languages. If you haven’t read it you should, and if you’ve already read it, you should read it again!
Just as “Alice in Wonderland” was getting published all around the globe the Beach Boys were getting around on this day in 1964 when “I Get Around” hit #1.
Not to be outdone the Rolling Stones released “Honky Tonk Woman” on this day in 1969. A great song!
If you like rap, and I’m is still considering my position on this one. No I’m not, I hate it! Anyway for all our rap fans here is the 2 Live Crew “Banned in the USA” released on this day in 1990. Enjoy!
Our first birthday tribute goes to the pin up actress of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s Gina Lollobrigida (1927). Lovely lady and still going strong!
Happy birthday wishes also to Dave Rowberry (1943 – 2003), keyboardist for the Animals and “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” is one of their best! Gone but not forgotten!
Happy Special Day to one and all!!
If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.
For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!
For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!
And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!
If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.
Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
