First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Filing for a patent today in 1879 was George Seldon. The patent was the first for a petrol powered engine. George was obviously a man who new what the future foretold and made a small fortune from his patent. It was unfortunately all going to end in tears when on appeal one Henry Ford won his case against Sheldon and went off and did his own thing. Never mind, George, it was great while it lasted!

It was a happy day for Europe on this day in 1945 when Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies and the war in Europe was over at last. Sadly it would continue for some time longer in the East. VE-Day as it has become known is celebrated throughout Europe.

It was on this day in 1962 that London trolley buses went out of service and one of the classic pictures of the London scene came to an end. Never mind, they were never there when you needed one anyway!

In the start of what was to become one of the biggest money spinning film series of all time the first James Bond film premiered in the US on this day in 1963. The film was “Dr No”, James Bond was Sean Connery, and the first “Bond Girl” was Ursula Andress. The opening title sequence was to become an icon of the era.

Singing for truth and peace the Beatles released their “Let it Be” (insert clip, please, x) album on this day in 1970.

The WHO (World Health Organisation), not the group, announced on this day in 1980 that small pox had been eradicated. And about time too! All we’ve got to worry about today is the latest too hot to handle swine ‘flu virus from Mexico!

Attempting to keep the feet of Londoners dry it was on this day in 1984 that the Thames Barrier was officially opened. It has been used a few times and has worked out OK but pundits reckon that it isn’t high enough as we didn’t know then what we do know now, apparently. Nomanda blames it all on Global Warming. Why not, everyone else does!

Birthday celebrities today start with Jean Henri Dunant (1828 – 1910) the founder of the Red Cross and the inspiration behind the Geneva Convention. He was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, and quite rightly too.

The rubber faced comedian and actor, Sid James (1913 – 1976), was born on this day His performances in the “Carry on Series” and his partnership with Tony Hancock in “Hancock’s Half Hour” will be fondly remembered by his fans.

Our final birthday greetings today go to David Attenborough (1926), the famous naturalist, whose work on the BBC’s “Life” series have become all time classics for nature lovers everywhere.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Royal weddings, films, musicals and waxworks all feature in today’s day in history.

One Italian composer who decided to chose this day in 1855 to leave his homeland and travel west to France was the famous composer, Rossini (1792 – 1869). Nomanda’s favourite work of his is his “William Tell” overture closely followed by the “Barber of Seville”.

It was on this day in 1923 that the late Queen Mother married the Duke of York at Westminster Abbey in London. It’s amazing that this was the first royal wedding to be celebrated there since 1383. I wonder why. Thankfully it is now the place of choice.

Opening in London on this day in 1928 was Madame Tussaud’s waxwork exhibition and it has been a “must see” tourist attraction ever since. Did Joey visit it on his visit to London?

It was on this day in 1962 that the spacecraft Ranger 4 crash landed on the “backside” of the moon. I bet that hurt! The craft was designed to transmit pictures of the moon’s surface back to earth, but evidently it didn’t work out. However, as it crashed on the “backside” of the moon, who knows what happened as I guess that’s the side that can’t be seen. Maybe it just went on going and got lost.

The premiere of Dr Zhivago took place in London on this day in 1966. Still a classic movie. And it was on this day in 1986 that the multi talented Michael Crawford gave his last performance in “Barnum”. Phamtomastic performer!

One of our all time favourites would have been celebrating his birthday today, William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616). Did a lot in not too long a lifetime.

Shaking of a different kind would be measured by our next birthday boy, Charles Richter (1900 – 1985).

And shaking her stuff in another way our final birthday wishes today go to Claudine Auger (1942). As well as being Miss France in 1958 she is remembered for her performance opposite our favourite James Bond actor, Sean Connery, as “Domino” in “Thunderball”. Characterised as being nor too lucky picking her boy friend, the baddie Emile Largo, we are delighted that she hooked up with James in the end.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

Are there enough pubs in England? We all know that the traditional English pub is under the same commercial pressures as many other businesses, especially in today’s financial climate. However the number of pubs serving the population is shrinking at a more alarming rate than many may believe. In the 1840’s which is around the time that there were proper censuses and worthwhile statistics there were 95,820 pubs serving a population of approximately 16 million. That works out at 1 pub for every 156 people. Today the population is around 61 million with a mere 53,000 pubs and that works out at 1 pub for 1,150 people! None the wonder there’s always a queue at the bar to get a drink!

I don’t know how long you had to wait to get a drink at the “Heartbreak Hotel” but I’m sure Elvis could have told you when he recorded that song on this day in 1956! It breaks your heart all that waiting!

Buddy Holly didn’t care how long he waited as he said in his last record “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” released on this day in 1959! It was to be his last song recorded so I guess it really didn’t!

The builder of the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan (1592 – 1666) is our first birthday celebrity today. He built the mausoleum at Agra in memory of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. That’s a great name for a wife and mother! Sadly his son and heir didn’t share his father’s respect and grief and shortly after the tomb was completed he had his Dad arrested and put in jail where he spent the rest of his years whilst his son enjoyed the perks and benefits of being the “Ruler of the World”!

The author of the biblical murder mystery, “The Name of the Rose”, Umberto Eco (1932) is our next birthday celebrity. If you haven’t seen the film, starring Sean Connery, you should. Wet your appetite with this clip. If you haven’t read the book then be warned that it’s a bit of a challenge!

The co-founder and guitarist of the group Blondie, Chris Stein (1949) is our next birthday boy. If you get an invite to his party, please be gentle with him because he’s got a “Heart of Glass”!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

I guess most people are fascinated about whether or not there is life out there somewhere. In fact over the years there have been substantial rewards for anyone able to make contact. However, there was a guy who put up 100,000 francs for a successful contact on this day in 1900 but excluded contact with Martians from the deal as they were considered “too easy”! You have to be joking!

Nomanda likes a good read and from time to time buries himself in the Sunday newspapers. I doubt whether I would have got to the end of the Sunday New York Times published on this day in 1965 that contained an impressive 946 pages of print. You’d need a wheelbarrow to get the thing home! Not bad value though at just 50c a copy!

Our favourite James Bond actor, Sean Connery, was on a bit of a high on this day in 1971 when he starred in the film “Diamonds are Forever”. It was the 7th Bond film and Connery’s 6th appearance as the hero.

Proving its title wrong the soap opera “One Life to Live” aired its 6,000th episode on this day in 1991. The soap started in 1968 and is still going strong and if Nomanda’s abacus is correct the 10, 340th episode will be aired this week! That’s at least two lives!

Britain’s first teen idol Tommy Steele (1936) may be having a bit of steak on the menu at his birthday bash today. I just hope it’s not come from his favourite “Little White Bull”!

The “Last of the Mohicans” Wes Studi (1947) will be settling down in front of the fire with his peace pipe at his party today.

Sarah Dallin
(1961) from the group Bananarama may invite a few of her friends from “Venus” to her party!

Our final birthday wishes go to the Saint Bernard dog “Benedictus” (1970) who went on to be the world’s heaviest canine at a massive 137kgs. You’d appreciate him coming over the snowy ridge to rescue you with a large barrel of brandy dangling from his collar! Wuff wuuf, Benedictus!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

In another relatively quiet day of things that interest Nomanda it was on this day in 1962 that the Beatles released their very first record “Love Me Do”. Well we did and they went on to record many more great songs that only made us love them more

It was on this day in 1969 that “Monty Python” was first shown on the BBC. It was to become a cult classic and has spawned numerous shows, films and books all doing very nicely thank you for the original cast members! There are lots of clips to choose from and here is one of Nomanda’s favourites!

The Australian actress Diane Cilento (1933) was born in Brisbane on this day. Apart from being married to Sean Connery for 11 years she is probably best known for her performance in the “Wicker Man”. She’s obviously had an interesting life as demonstrated in her autobiography published in 2006 entitled “My Nine Lives”!

The “Space Cowboy”, Steve Miller (1943) will be celebrating his birthday today with a few of his ET mates!

Karen Allen (1951) will be raiding the fridge to get everything organised for her birthday bash today. I just hope there aren’t any old relics lurking in the contents!

Living in the tennis shadow of her better known sister Nomanda thinks that we should send Jeanne Evert (1957) a special birthday wish today!

Our final birthday wishes go to the lovely English actress Kate Winslet (1975). She’s made some great films and received numerous award nominations in her short life so far. We wish her the very best for the future!
