Gemstone of the Month

Flower of the Month: Daffodil

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

I must tell you about our doggie breakthrough over the last couple of days. We adopted Boule, a lovely Beagle/Spaniel cross from our local refuge centre a few months ago and have been training him and walking him on a leash since we brought him home. Two days ago we decided to let him go free off his leash and to see what happened. When he returned into earth orbit he came jogging back to us as though he’s been doing it all his life! We tried the same thing again today and he’s getting better all the time! We just love him to death!! Good Boy!

Happy days were here again for all those who don’t like walking up lots of stairs as on this day in 1892 Jesse W Reno patented the very first escalator. Phew, that’s better!

Going one step better for lovers of great cars and aero engines today is a day to celebrate the founding in 1906 of one of the best known companies in the world, Rolls Royce. The two companies, British Rolls and Royce and Johnson merged to become Rolls Royce. And I think they got it right. Can you imagine the company being called Rolls Johnson, or Rolls Royce and Johnson, no I don’t think so? It doesn’t ring any bells.

Talking of bells it was on this day in 1940 that Hitler’s henchman Goering declared that Germany didn’t need any more than 200-300 church bells and to smelt the rest. Ding Dong!

Bells were ringing today as today was a special day for a celebrity couple in 1964 when Elizabeth Taylor married Richard Burton. It was Liz’s 5th attempt to get it right and it didn’t work out as they divorced only to re-marry again a few years later. Ding Dong! Ding Dong!

Today’s birthday boy is a real oldie. Born on 15th March 0076 was the guy who built the great wall across Northern Britain, the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The Romans built things to last and the wall is still there today. However the jury is still out on whether Hadrian’s Wall was built to keep the English in or the Scots out.

Our final birthday guest is “Rockwell” (1964) the vocalist who has a phobia about “Someone Watching Me”! As a matter of fact, so have I!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!

10 November - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Chrysanthemum

Gemstone of the Month: Topaz

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

When a couple of travelling salesmen get together they usually share their thoughts on the products they sell, how difficult life is, and end up commiserating with each other over a few beers. At least that’s what Nomanda’s experience has been! Not so the two evangelical salesmen who founded Gideon International. They came up with the idea of putting a bible in every hotel room to comfort their travelling companions. The very first “Gideon” was put in the Superior Hotel in Montana exactly 100 years ago on this day in 1908. Nice gesture but most of the travelling salesmen I know would have preferred the directions to the nearest party place!

In a world where we take most things for granted it seems incredible that it was just over 50 years ago that the first long distance ‘phone call was placed without needing the assistance of the operator on this day in 1951. Operators are a thing of the past and you’re very lucky these days if you can get through on the ‘phone to speak to anybody without having to pass numerous “press button” instructions. Nomanda lives a very isolated life and often wonders whether there really is anyone still out there or is everyone just an answering machine!

Subject to many thefts over his long peeing life the “Manneken Pis” statue was once again stolen from its pedestal in the Grand Plaza of Brussels on this day in 1965. The poor lad has been returned to his place of glory and continues to give the tourists of Brussels a smile. If you are really lucky from time to time he is connected up to a beer barrel and you can enjoy a free one! Check before drinking!

The fiery Welsh actor Richard Burton (1925 – 1984) is our birthday celebrity today. His life off the screen was as dramatic as some of the characters he played on screen and Nomanda’s favourite performance is “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold”.
