And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

All is not lost when you’re lost, if you know what I mean, because it was on this day in 1494 that Columbus discovered Jamaica. He was looking for a westward route to the east when he just stumbled across it. He wanted to call it St Iago, after Saint James the Greater (than the Lesser, of course) but it’s now just known as Jamaica.

Not exactly lost, but like fishes out of water the US Marines landed in Nicaragua on this day in 1926. Ostensibly they were there to protect US citizens and interests (where have we heard that before) however they meddled in the country’s politics. Getting nowhere fast they pulled out 7 years later no better off than when they arrived and as time would tell, no wiser!

Bigger and better was the order of the day on this day in 1973 when Chicago’s Sears Towers, the world’s tallest building at that time, was finished. It would retain this record for many years and was only surpassed recently in 2007 by the Burj Dubai which according to its developers has exceeded the Sears Towers in all height categories. I bet it’s even hotter there as well!

A “Sun Day” celebrating all things solar was held on this day in the US in 1978. I hope that they had good meteorological forecasts and knew when it would be a nice and sunny day to show off all their goodies. Frankly the weather we’ve been having recently would be more suitable for a “Fish and Duck Day” than anything else!

The “Iron Lady”, as she was affectionately known, started measuring up the curtains in number 10 when on this day in 1979 Margaret Thatcher led the Conservative party into office. She held on to the curtains for far too long! Smashing the unions and encouraging boundless greed was her staple diet and the country hasn’t been the same since. Nevertheless she was the first female Prime Minister and held onto office for 11 years before her excesses even got too much for her party faithful and they unceremoniously booted her out. Not a day too soon!

One of Margaret’s special friends, none other than the other union basher across the pond, President Reagan, chose this day in 1982 to start his weekly 5 minute radio broadcasts to the nation. US citizens were spellbound and could hardly wait for next episode!

In a return match against the best that IBM could muster Gary Kasparov began his second round of chess matches against “Deep Blue” on this day in 1997. A bit disappointing all round as the result was the same as before with the computer winning 3 1/2 – 21/2. Well played, Gary!

Birthday greetings go firstly to one of the world’s greatest crooners, none other that Bing Crosby (1903 – 1977). Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without his rendition of “White Christmas”. Just love it!

Another singer celebrating his birthday today is Arnold George Dorsey. Strangely enough he didn’t go very far with that name, but when he changed it to Engelbert Humperdinck (1936) his career took off! Love him or hate him I’m sure at some time in your life you’ve hummed a bit of either “Release Me” or “Last Waltz” . Be honest!

Finally celebrating his birthday today and I’m sure in grand style is Ben Elton (1959). He is a very funny man and co-creator of the wonderful “Black Adder” series.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Flower of the Month: Sweet Pea

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is a happy day for Master’s Winners, sheep shearers, world super powers and flying machines, all of which feature today in history in some form or other.

It’s obviously Masters Season in Augusta so it’s not surprising that some of the world’s top golfers have celebrated this day by donning the green jacket. Trying the jacket out for size today in 1970 was Billy Casper, in 1975 it was Jack Nicklaus’ turn, Seve Ballesteros put it on in 1980, Jack got a new one in 1986 and in 1997 the redoubtable Tiger Woods got his hands on one.

Our sheep shearing shelebrity is New Zealander Colin Bosher, who on this day in 1964 sheared an amazing 565 sheep in a single day. I guess he was a golfing fanatic and wanted to get home early to watch the end of the Masters!

Going back a few years it was on this day in 1912 that the Royal Flying Corps was formed, later renamed the RAF. I still get a thrill watching the Red Arrows going through their paces. Nearly as fast as Colin!

Pan Am was feeling flush on this day in 1966 when they placed an order for 25 Boeing 747’s worth $525 million. I guess the CEO of Boeing was feeling pretty happy today as well.

In a masterly stroke of understatement it was on this day in 1970 that the crew of Apollo 13 announced to Mission Control in Houston, “Houston, we’ve got a problem!” You bet they had. The oxygen tank had exploded and they were forced to transfer to the Lunar Module. Despite the difficulties and hardships endured by the crew they successfully returned to Earth and the mission was described as a “Successful Failure”!

We all know that luck plays a significant part in life and if you were lucky enough to have joined “Grease” playing at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York you would have celebrated this day in 1980 as the last of 3,388 performances. Here’s one of our favourites from the show! On the other hand if you had joined the cast of “Reggae” playing down the road at the Biltmore Theatre, then on the same day you would be closing down after just 21 performances! Life’s a bitch!

It was a special day today for Harold Washington in 1980 who celebrated this day as being the first black man to be elected mayor of Chicago. I wonder if his name helped!

Finally, as if they didn’t have enough land already China celebrated this day in 1987 by receiving an agreement from Portugal that they would return Macau back to them in 1999.

Today’s birthday wishes go to Alfred Mosher Butts (1899 – 1993), the inventor of the game “Scrabble”. He lived to a ripe old age and probably bored the pants off his fellow residents in their retirement home before he went off to play his final game!

Another celebrity good with words, the Irishman Samuel Beckett, was born on this day (1906 – 1989). His play “Waiting for Godot” is one of his best known works and has been described as a masterpiece of nothing that keeps the audience transfixed. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969 he is less well known for his work with the French Resistance during WWII preferring “France at war to Ireland in peace”.

Renowned for his performances as an upper class Englishman, Edward Fox was born on this day in 1937. He is one of Nomanda’s favourites and his masterly performances in “The Day of the Jackal”, “Force 10 from Navarone” and the TV series “Edward and Mrs Simpson” are simply wonderful.

The celebrated world chess champion Garry Kasparov was born on this day in 1963 and Jet Travolta shares her birthday with him in 1992. Shows it pays to have a high flying Daddie!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

9 November - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Topaz

Flower of the Month: Chrysanthemum

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The fast New Zealand bowler Richard Hadlee will have fond memories of this day in 1985 when he achieved his career best of 9 – 52 against Australia at the Brisbane cricket ground the “Gabba”. It was to be a successful series for the New Zealanders who beat Australia 1 – 0 and recorded their first win against Australia on home ground in the three test matches with Hadlee taking 33 wickets.

At the tender age of just 22 Gary Kasparov became the world chess champion on this day in 1985. Remarkably he won the deciding game playing the black pieces with a Sicilian defence. He would go on to be ranked #1 in chess for the best part of the next 20 years until he retired in 2005.

Another strong defence was to be opened on this day in 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down and East Germany opened its borders to the rest of the world. There was a lot of sorting out to do in the aftermath but it all worked out well in the end for both the united Germany and the rest of us.

The guy overly protective of his footwear, Carl Perkins (1932 – 1998) will be always remembered for his “Blue Shade Shoes”.

The lovely blond singer of the group Peter, Paul and Mary, Mary Travers (1936) may have to dash to the airport to “Leave on a Jet Plane” to make it to her birthday bash today!

Our next birthday wishes go to the guy with green skin and the muscle bound body, Lou Ferrigno (1951) aka the “Incredible Hulk”. Nomanda once went to a fancy dress party as this character and it took me ages to get rid of the green dye!

Get the condiment set out and be prepared to “Shake Ya Thang” for our final birthday girl Sandra Denton (1969). Nomanda likes a little salt but not too much pepper on his music, please!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
