11 April - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Diamond

Flower of the Month: Sweet Pea

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

One happy chappie on this day in 1814 was Napoleon Bonaparte despite the fact that he had been persuaded to abdicate by the Allies. He was looking on the bright side because, although he was being sent off in exile to Elba, he was allowed to take with him 1,000 men, his “household staff” and was even given the title ”Emperor of Elba”.
Not a bad deal for someone who has just had his bottom spanked! Anyway it wasn’t going to last as he got fed up with life on Elba and left 9 months later to start the 100 day campaign.

Celebrating this day in 1900 was the US Navy who had just launched their first submarine. I wonder if it was a yellow one.

Beyond my brain power but he was up for it at the time, Albert Einstein chose this day in 1906 to baffle the world with his Theory of Relativity. I still don’t get it!

In a stroke of imagination that was to be copied by tax raisers the world over ever since, the state of Iowa introduced the first tax on cigarettes on this day in 1921. Cough your hearts out, smokers!

One of Europe’s best loved and longest ruling monarchs, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, took to the throne on this day in 1951. His marriage to Grace Kelly guaranteed him a place in the memories of Americans who otherwise would probably have never heard of him!

The well loved golfer, Jack Nicklaus, liked this day as he won consecutive Maters titles on this day in 1965 (271 strokes) and 1966 (288 strokes). Seve Ballesteros was to go on and win his Master’s title on this day in 1983 (280 strokes). Good day for golfers, then!

For those golfers who have played on what can only be described as “Mickey Mouse” courses, don’t get too upset, as it was on this day in 1992 that Euro Disney opened just outside of Paris. Why they choose to build it there has always been a mystery to me unless the management really thought their visitors enjoyed walking around in the rain. Cue for Ginger!

Today’s birthday greetings go to Adriano Olivetti (1901 – 1960). He deserves a special mention as without his inventive skills and manufacturing capacity Nomanda may not be here at all!

The Smurf song singer (bit of a mouthful that!), Pierre Cartner gets our birthday wishes today (1935). And our birthday girl today is Lisa Stansfield (1965). We’ll go “All Around the World” to wish you Happy Birthday, Lisa!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

21 January - Historical Events and Special Celebration

Gemstone of the Month

Garnet

Flower of the Month: Carnation

When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary, if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

You would have thought that when locking up someone who does amazing feats of escape for a living that the authorities may take special precautions when locking him up for a misdemeanour. Well they didn’t, and on this day in 1903 the escapologist Harry Houdini escaped from a police cell in Amsterdam! Actually it was all part of his act and publicity stunts. In his travels and performances around Europe he would often challenge the local security force to lock him up and then confound them all by escaping. Some police forces even went to the lengths of leaving him naked in the cell but somehow he still managed to get away! Great stuff!

In a ridiculous gesture of male chauvinism it was on this day in 1908 that New York City issued a regulation making it illegal for women to smoke in public. I must admit that it doesn’t do much for a ladies’ charm to see her walking down the street with a fag dangling from her mouth, but if she wants to then that’s OK with Nomanda. Things have moved on. Nowadays the wide open public places are about the only place left for anyone to smoke! I just love those little clusters of smoking lepers hanging around outside their offices sucking up their smoky fumes in the cold and rain whilst all the do goody non smokers enjoy a computer controlled air conditioned atmosphere inside free of the filthy weed! It’s just not fair!

Whoops! I should have mentioned this earlier for the benefit of all our gold traders out there! Do not buy any gold today as this day over the last few years has seen gold reach its top price. It hit $161.31 an ounce in 1974, $875 a troy ounce in 1979 and $850 an ounce in 1980. On the other hand do go out and buy because Nomanda has decided to sell all his gold today!

Nomanda has come across the Gay and Lesbian Olympics in his research and meanderings but discovered today that there is also a Nude Olympics! And apparently on this day in 1986 a brave (or stupid) 100 participants raced in Indiana in a temperature of just 3°C! Now it’s not that cold here today and I’m wearing several layers of clothing to keep warm so Nomanda has to declare that he will not be participating in any such events in the near future, unless the price is very right!

There are a lot of celebrities competing to be on Nomanda’s birthday list today so let’s start with one of the best English actors of the 20th century, Paul Scofield (1922 – 2008). His performance as Thomas Moore in “A Man for All Seasons” is one of his best!

Not quite in the same league as Paul, Telly Savalas (1924 – 1994) is our next man up for honours. I just can’t see Paul sucking a lollypop and making it his trademark somehow!

And in a different class altogether Benny Hill (1925 – 1992) deserves a mention if not a clip!

One of the best golfers ever, Jack Nicklaus (1940) is our next birthday boy. Nomanda would love to have a game with him one day as long as he gave me a few shots!

A couple of singers differing in class, style and …… well they’re just worlds apart, are sharing their birthdays today. Placido Domingo (1941) is one, and Emma Bunton (1976) is the other! Have a listen to the first and then to the latter and decide who your favourite is.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

1 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Turquoise

Flower of the Month: Paper White

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

BINGO” shouts the fat lady furiously waving her card to be checked and to be paid her winnings. Well we all have the toy salesman Edwin s Lowe to thank for the invention of this stupid game on this day in 1929. The game occupies bored people and seduces them with the chance of winning money. Mind-blowingly dull and profitable only for the organisers! That’s why so many churches run bingo nights!

Much more interesting is the first coloured photograph of the earth from space that was taken on this day in 1959. It is a beautiful sight to behold and although only the odd astronaut and the few wealthy “space tourists” will witness it for real, thanks to the camera we can all enjoy it.

The colour of skin was the topic of the moment on this day in 1965 when the South African government declared that all children of white fathers are white. Now I do know that governments can be a bit stupid sometimes but I can imagine the case where a child of a white father and a black mother will have skin a darker tone than a similar child of a black father and a white mother. Yet according to this fantastic piece of administrative stupidity the darker one is “white” and the lighter one is “black”! It must be true, check it out on your ID card!

Almost at the end of the professional golfing calendar for the year it was on this day in 1973 that the great Jack Nicklaus became the first golfer to win $2 million dollars in a year. Well done, Jack! Nowadays the top player in a big competition can earn that amount in one event. Doesn’t seem right to me!

One of Michael Jackson’s best selling records “Thriller” was released on this day in 1982. Despite his enormous success and sponsorship deals he seems to have lost most of the money he’s earned and I understand that “Never Never Land” is now shortly to go under the hammer.

With a Frenchman at one end and an Englishman at the other, both armed with a shovel and a bit of earthmoving equipment, they started digging the channel tunnel on this day in 1987. And just 3 years later they met on this day in 1990. Neat work and great timing!

Not one of Nomanda’s favourites but it would be churlish to let Woody Allen’s birthday (1935) pass without a mention.

The rocking drummer of the ‘60’s Sandy Nelson (1938) will be beating his way to the bar at his birthday bash today. “Teen Beat” is probably his best known record and it makes you want to get up and go strictly come jiving!

One of Nomanda’s favourite golfers Lee Trevino (1939) is our next birthday boy today. With 6 majors to his name Nomanda reckons he can give himself a day off from the practice range and have a great birthday party!

The evergreen Bette Midler (1945) is our last birthday guest. She’s done lots of stuff and is currently appearing at Caesar’s Palace with a couple of other evergreens, Cher and Elton John. I wonder who does the wake up calls!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
