30 April - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Sweet Pea

Gemstone of the Month: Diamond

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

George Washington gets pride of place today as it was on this day in 1789 that he was inaugurated as the first president of the United States. There have been many after him but few of his stature.

A couple of more trivial events took place on this day. John Clais patented the first dial weighing scale in 1772 and it took best part of 135 years for the ice cream vendors to get the mix right for the first ice cream cone that was introduced on this day in 1904. I guess ice cream lovers had to manage with just a tub and a spoon up to then.

In a feat of great strength and endurance Ashrita Furman performed 8,341 forward rolls over a distance of 12 miles. This was not to be his last record breaking attempt! Over the last 25 years he has set 187 official Guinness records and still currently holds 81 of them. There again, I don’t know too many people who want to jump up and down the foothills of mount Fuji on a pogo stick! Check out his achievements at his web site.

One of Ashrita’s records, this one doing something with the world’s biggest hula hoop (I don’t think we’ve heard the last of this man!) took place in Australia where the 1988 world exhibition was opened in Brisbane on this day. Nomanda has visited Brisbane recently and didn’t see either the exhibition or the hula hoop! I need to get out more!

The clock wasn’t striking in London on this day in 1997 when Big Ben stopped at 12.11pm for 54 minutes. A national disgrace, if you ask me!

Birthday honours today go first of all to Heinrich Schlappi (1905). Nomanda has never heard of this Swiss gentleman before but he had his moment of fame in 1924 when he won his Winter Olympic gold medal on the 4 man bobsleigh team. So Schlappi and his mates were the fastest down the schlippery schlopes! There are times when I just can’t help myself!

Sheldon Harnick, the lyricist of “Fiddler on the Roof” was born on this day in 1924. His famous song “If I were a Rich Man” is known the world over, mostly by poor people!

One of the most popular singers of the ‘60’s, Bobby Vee, was born on this day in 1943. Some of his famous hits include “The Night has a Thousand Eyes”, “Take Good Care of my Baby” and of course “Rubber Ball”. Great old Oldies! If you like watching blokes driving their motor bikes wearing only their underpants you’ll just love this stuff!

Another popular singer, the “Big Daddy” of the Osmond Brothers, eldest brother Merrill, was born on this day in 1953. Their youthful rendition of “Side by Side” makes Nomanda want to puke!

We shouldn’t forget to include Kirsten Dunst in our birthday wishes (1982). Her performances in “Bring it On” and “Spider Man” have delighted her many fans.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

4 March - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Gemstone of the Month: Bloodstone

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Still considered by many to have been the greatest US President in was on this day in 1793 that George Washington made his second inaugural speech. It was the shortest inauguration speech ever, just 133 words, and he simply asked the people of the US to take him to task if he failed to uphold any of the promises made in the oath of office. Nomanda admires people of few words and high moral standards. It’s a pity there aren’t more like George around!

At the other end of the scale of inaugural speeches it was on this day in 1841 that President William Henry Harris made the longest speech of 8,443 words! He was the oldest President elected to the office, until old Ronald Reagan came along, and died in office just 32 days into his tenure probably in empathy to all those who had died of boredom listening to his inaugural address!

On the subject of American Presidents it was on this day in 1933 that President Franklin D Roosevelt was inaugurated and in his speech said the famous words in reference to pulling the US out of the Depression, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself”.

Is it my imagination or do I detect a spot of “déja vu” here?

In a bold statement on this day in 1966 John Lennon declared that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus! Yes, they were popular and still are, but THAT popular, I doubt it!

On a lighter note it was on this day in 1924 that Nomanda’s signature song, “Happy Birthday to You” was first published by Claydon Sunny. So if it’s your birthday today allow yourself a double helping of your birthday song, one for you and the other for the composer.

Our first celebrity today is the composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) whose composition “Four Seasons” has delighted music lovers for generations. As Spring is nearly in the air, let’s hear that section of the man’s great work!

The author of “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner”, Alan Sillitoe (1928) is our next birthday guest. Nomanda has identified with the main character on many occasions including being stuck out on the desolated wing of a rugby pitch on wintry Saturday afternoons knowing that my fellow team mates will never be able to handle the ball all the way out to me! It gets really lonely and cold out there!

The Welsh rock and roll singer Shakin Stevens (1948) is our next birthday guest. His video of “This Ole House” reminds me of the state our “ole house” was in when we first moved in!

Our final birthday boy is Chris Rea (1951). You will not be a “Fool If You Think It Is Over” because Nomanda will be back tomorrow, folks!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

I really haven’t got anything against taxi drivers, I’m sure out of their workplace they are all quite decent blokes, but there’s something that happens to them when they get behind the wheel of their cab and go to work! A few are cheerful, but most are non communicative and surly, especially if they don’t like the size of your tip! All London taxi fares are metered and it was on this day in 1907 that the first meters began operating and they’ve been ticking over at ever increasing rates ever since. I don’t know about you but I’ve hardly got my bum on the seat before the first fiver has been clocked up! I sit there mesmerised by the speed the meter ticks over and start worrying about whether I’ve got enough cash to cover the fare. Nevertheless they do a great job and as long as you’ve allowed enough time whatever the traffic they have always got me to where I want to be with seconds to spare!

When I was a lad we used to have a dog racing track at the bottom of our garden. You can see from what humble beginnings Nomanda started out in life! If I climbed a tree I could see all the races going on and watched with boyish pleasure the dogs racing around the track chasing the artificial rabbit and going like crazy! It never occurred to me that there was a time before the dogs chased an artificial rabbit as the first artificial rabbit was introduced on this day in 1907 at a track in Emeryville, California. My mind boggles to think what they must have done before! Sounds awful, poor fluffy!

The group Genesis released their first record on this day in 1968. It was called “Silent Sun” and here it is! They would go on to do much better stuff and Nomanda thinks that Phil Collins is just great!

America’s first president George Washington (1732 – 1799) is our first birthday celebrity today. To find out more about this great man visit this site.

Our next birthday celebrity is the evergreen Bruce Forsyth (1928). He is a great character and still entertains millions through “Strictly Come Dancing”. Long may it last, Bruce, because "Doddery you are NOT"!

The next celebrity to get Nomanda’s birthday wishes today is Jeri Ryan best known for her character “7 of 9” in “Star Trek Voyager”. She gets 10 out of 10 from Nomanda!

Our final birthday greetings go to the lovely musician Jenny Frost (1978). She used to be an Atomic Kitten and here’s one of Nomanda’s favourites!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

It was on this day in 1793 following the French Revolution that France became the first country to use the metric system. In fact the groundwork had been commissioned by the then late Louis XIV who charged a group of experts to develop “a unified, natural and universal system of measurement” to replace the current disparate systems. The basic idea had appealed to mathematicians centuries earlier and those who had studied it concluded that it would only be a matter of time before it was adopted. Today the metric system is used world wide with just three countries not participating, Liberia, Myanmar (Burma) and of course the great US of A! Odd that!

Nomanda is quite partial to a drop of whiskey so when I discovered that it was on this day in 1794 that the Whiskey Rebellion began I thought it deserved further research! Following the American Civil War the new Federal government needed to raise taxes to repay the debts arising from the war. A tax was levied on whiskey producers but the tax was levied in such as way as to penalise small producers in favour of larger producers of the golden nectar. Small producers paid the tax by the gallon (back to imperial measurements!) whereas larger producers could opt for a flat fee. Strangely enough the President, George Washington, just happened to be one of the larger producers at the time. Maybe he wasn’t such a saint after all! Suffice it to say that despite the government’s efforts and a few skirmishes the tax, which had proved extremely difficult to collect, was repealed in 1803. Thank Goodness! The tax also had the effect of encouraging producers outside of Pennsylvania; Kentucky and Tennessee to come up with the other great drink, Bourbon! So it’s not all bad news!

Moving on a few years the guy who liked his drinks with a twist, Chubby Checker released the song "The Twist" on this day in 1960. It’s one of the few dances that Nomanda was any good at so let’s do it! Happily I don’t get too many opportunities to do it these days! It’s so sad!

For the otherwise inclined the 1st August 1998 heralded the opening of the #5 Gay and Lesbian Games in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a great city that caters for all tastes so a quick sweep of the streets and you’d be able to bag heaps of qualifiers for this great event. In his speech at the Opening Ceremony playwright Harvey Fierstein said the following words, you are not going to believe this!

We have arrived here on the backs of generations before us. When you step into the spotlight stand proud for the generations to come who will be riding on your backs.

It’s not often I’m lost for words but there is nothing Nomanda can add!

Today is what they call a “slow day” in terms of birthday celebrities so the first up to make the cut is the rapper “Coolio” (1963). I think his name is so cool and if you like rapping then you’ll like this rendition of “Gangster Paradise”. If you don’t then you won’t and you’ll be in good company!

Our final birthday boy is the left handed batsman Graham Thorpe (1969) who made a century on his test debut in 1993. He played in 100 test matches and had a batting average of 44.66 which is very creditable. Cheers, Graham!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
