23 February - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Amethyst

Flower of the Month: Violet

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

We all know that great oak trees grow from little acorns and to prove the point the very first classified advertisement appeared in the London Times on this day in 1886. Nowadays there are complete “freesheets” stuffed full with nothing else but classified ads and you have to beat a path to your front door through the morass of newsprint that clutters up the floor! Does anyone actually read any of the stuff?

When I read that the Russian Tsar Nicholas II dissolved the Finnish Diet on this day in 1909 I was hoping to discover some new easy to drink slimming regime with lots of saunas and therapeutic massages. Imagine my disappointment when actually it was no more than another despot getting rid of an elected legislative assembly!

We recently celebrated the anniversary of George Washington, the guy who couldn’t tell a lie, so I guess it’s only right that we celebrate the birthday on this day in 1940 of the little boy “Pinocchio” who couldn’t tell the truth and every time he lied his nose grew a bit! The animated cartoon was released by Disney on this day and here is one of Nomanda’s favourite clips from the movie!

Ethical positions get ever much more complicated as medical science progresses and frankly I’m not too sure where I stand on some of the issues but it was on this day in 1997 that Scottish scientists announced that the had cloned a lamb and called her “Dolly”. It does however give me an excellent excuse to let Barbra Streisand wish the fortunate or unfortunate beast a Happy Birthday!

Our first birthday celebrity today is the Member of Parliament, Chief Secretary to the Admiralty and diary writer Samuel Pepys (1633 – 1703). Much of what we now know of the British Restoration period comes from the great man’s daily doodles! Apparently he was inspired to write his dairies during the night from which we get the immortal words, “And oh what a sight in the middle of the night when naughty Samuel peeps!”

Our next birthday star is the singer from the Dutch group the Dolly Dots, Ria Brieffies (1958) and if you’re up for it here is one of their very best songs!

The day would not be complete without mentioning the birthday of Countess Mariae Gloria Ferdinanda Gerda Charlotte Teutonia Franziska Magarethe Frederike Simone Johanna Joachima Josefine Wilhelmine Huberta of Schönburg in Glauchau and Waldenburg (1960). Can you imagine how long her “Happy Birthday” song would take?

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

12 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Today is

Poinsettia Day

Flower of the Month: Paper White Gemstone of the Month: Turquoise

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

You stick them in the ground, put your ball on top of them and then blast away with your driver! Spare a thought for the guy who patented the humble wooden golf tee, George F Bryant of Boston, on this day in 1899. I know that they mostly break after you hit the ball but they are not very expensive and I guess old George didn’t make a fortune from his patent! I even know golfers who scavenge around the tee looking for ones that have been lost or that are not too badly broken!

A much more complicated bit of machinery, the first prototype of the Hovercraft was patented on this day in 1955 by its inventor Christopher Cockerell. Now there’s a piece of kit that’s got a future! Amazingly he started testing his theories with a hair dryer and tin cans before he moved on to his first balsa wood craft!

There was nothing wooden about Barbra Streisand’s performance in “Hello Dolly” that premiered on this day in 1969.

The Norwegian painter with an uncanny ability to unsettle people with his art, Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944) is our first birthday celebrity. If you think his best known work “The Scream” is frightening, you ought to have a look at his self portrait!

Our next birthday boy is none other than “old blue eyes” himself, Frank Sinatra (1915 – 1998). He sang, he acted and he directed films, and of all the stuff he’s done this has to be one of Nomanda’s favourites!

The evergreen choreographer and dancer, Lionel Blair (1931) is our next birthday boy and is still going strong. I bet he’ll be showing off some of his fancy footwork at his birthday bash today!

Our final birthday greetings go to Dave Munden (1943) of The Tremeloes. Strangely enough they recorded lots of songs that shortly later were recorded more successfully by the Beatles! What do you think of their version of “Do You Love Me”?

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

2 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Paper White

Gemstone of the Month: Turquoise

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The launching of a new car model is always something that the car manufacturer wants to make a lot of fuss about. He wants to show off his latest offering both to the car buying public and to the press and to get as much publicity as possible. The price does it for me on this day in 1927 when the first Model A Ford went on sale for the princely sum of $385!

Doing it by numbers rather than letters Boeing unveiled their jumbo jet, the 747, on this day in 1969. It’s amazing to think they’ve been around that long! Planes have got bigger, but have they got any better than this icon of the aviation world?

Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand teamed up to not send each other flowers on this day in 1978 when their record “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” went to the #|1 spot on this day in 1978.

The opera singer “La Divina”, Maria Callas (1923 – 1977) is our first birthday celebrity today. Have a listen to “O Mio Babbino Caro” and you’ll see how she got her nickname!

I’m betting that Maria Callas couldn’t play tennis and I’m pretty sure that Monica Seles (1973) can’t sing, but she hits a hard ball and grunts a lot!

Our final birthday wishes go to another singer, Britney Spears (1981). She’s had her media problems over the last few years but she’s become a legend in her own coffee break. School girls weren’t like this when Nomanda went to school so let’s hear Britney’s “Baby One More Time” one more time!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

1 October - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Opal

Flower of the Month: Calendula

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

If you like nature and enjoy looking at stunning photographs then you will join Nomanda in celebrating the publication of the “National Geographic” magazine that was first published on this day in 1886. It is the official journal of the National Geographic Society and is now published in 32 different languages and has a monthly world wide circulation of 50 million copies. Not being one of the fortunate 50 million Nomanda usually browses copies of the magazine in other people’s waiting rooms!

Nomanda is always impressed with records of speed and endurance and on this day in 1928 the Belgian Leon Vanderstuyft managed to achieve both by cycling an amazing 76 miles and 504 yards in just one hour. Of course nobody would be able to do that today as there’s just too much traffic on the roads!

In a pretty empty gesture it was on this day in 1958 that Britain transferred Christmas Island to Australia. The Brits had been using the island as a test base for atomic explosions so it was little wonder that nobody could find it when the transfer was completed! Today it has a population of just 1,493 and it’s amazing how they have managed to survive with all those bombs going off around them!

This day in 1962 was a good day for signing music contracts as Barbra Streisand signed her contract with Columbia records and the crafty Brian Epstein signed up the Beatles!

The first of October is an important date in the calendar of the Walt Disney Company as Walt Disney World opened in 1971 on this day and on the same day in 1982 the EPCOT Centre opened. With “The Magic Kingdom” attracting around 17 million “guests” per year and the EPCOT Centre attracting a further 11 million it looks as though somebody got their sums right! As I’ve said before, great stuff from a Mickey Mouse company!

The very funny award winning actor Walter Matthau (1920 – 2000) is our first birthday celebrity today. One of the very best and funniest films he made with his friend Jack Lemmon is the “Odd Couple” and if you haven’t seen it you should!

Many other great performers share their birthday with Walter including George Peppard (1928 – 1994), Richard Harris (1930 – 2002), and last but not least Julie Andrews (1935).

One of the most influential singers of the ‘60’s, Scott McKenzie (1944) is probably still wearing flowers in his hair and if you don’t believe me then let’s all go to “San Francisco” and find out!

Jay Underwood (1968) achieved every little boy’s dream when he played the part of “the Boy Who Could Fly”. So “Mary Poppins” doesn’t have exclusive rights on that one then!

The Irish singer, Keith Duffy (1974) will be downing a few pints of the black stuff at his birthday bash today and I hope he invites his other Boyzone mates along to celebrate with him!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
