Gemstone of the Month: Emerald

First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today was a very special day in the history of our American fans because it was on this day in 1626 that Peter Minuit, the Dutchman, bought Manhattan Island. And what a deal he got! He bought the island from a local group of Indians for the princely sum of $24. Even this wasn’t given in cash but in the form of cloth and buttons to the value of $24. I bet he was laughing all the way to the bank, what a deal! Unfortunately for Peter, the Indians turned out to be not quite as stupid as he thought. The Indians he traded with were the “Carnasee” who in fact lived in Brooklyn and not on the island. The guys who did live on the island, the “Weekquaesgeeks” were singularly unimpressed with the whole deal and fought the Dutch invaders. I can just imagine Peter Minuit explaining to his boss when the troubles broke out that
All these Indians look the same to me.

On a day in history that appears to have not a lot going for it the humble folding umbrella gets a mention as it was on this day in 1715 that a French manufacturer unfurled the first example in Paris. Must admit, Paris is a good place to have one!

Another event of interest to our American readers is that it was on this day in 1893 that the cowboy, Bob Pickett, invented “Bulldogging”. To those who are not familiar with this particular sport, “Bulldogging” is basically wrestling with steers. The steer is released into the ring and is minding its own business when a cowboy on a horse rides in and in an act of extreme bravado (and stupidity) leaps off his horse, grabs the steer by its horns, and brings it to the ground. Bravo!

The next event of interest that took place on this day in 1974 was the release of their Eurovision Song Contest winning song by ABBA. It was called “Waterloo” and the world has not been the same since. To be fair they’ve made a lot of people happy with their music over the years so for those of you who want to sing along with ABBA click here and enjoy “Waterloo”. It takes you back. The rest, as they say, is history!

Birthday celebrities today are Thomas Huxley (1825 – 1895) the “bulldog” defender of Darwin’s theory of evolution and the guy who reckons that birds are descended from dinosaurs. Well they certainly got a lot smaller!

Our other celebrity whose birthday it is today is the lovely Audrey Hepburn (1929 – 1993). Born in Brussels, Belgium, her performances in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “My Fair Lady” are her best known and loved.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today was happy day indeed for the Indian Princess, Pocahontas, daughter of the Indian chief, Wahahsunacock, (I’ve checked the spelling and it is correct!) who on this day in 1614 married the Virginian colonist and tobacco producer, John Rolfe. She was baptised after her wedding and took the name Rebecca Rolfe. I prefer her Indian name!

I know from my days of living in England that today is the last day of the English tax year and one person anxious to get his accounts in order was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle because it was on this day over the following years that he started writing some of his famous Sherlock Holmes stories. The year 1889 saw the start of the “Adventures of Copper Beeches”, he started the “Adventures of Empty House" in 1894, and started the”Adventures of Three Students” in 1895.

Not such a happy day in 1895 for another author, poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde, who lost his libel case on this day against the Marquis of Queensberry who had accused him of homosexual practices. In fact things would get worse for the Irishman as this decision eventually led to his prosecution and three year imprisonment.

On a happier note, it was on this day in 1923 that Firestone started production of their first inflatable tyres, and 40 years later completed on this day in 1962 cars running on those tyres could whiz through the St Bernard tunnel, connecting Switzerland to Italy.

The following year on this day in 1963 the Beatles had their first silver disc with “Please, Please Me” and would go on to please many fans in the future.

The Wold Trade Centre opened on this day in 1974 becoming the world’s tallest building at that time with a staggering 110 stories. Sadly no-one was to know the disaster to come.

And a special for our Australian readers it was on this day in 1986 that the record throw and return (that bit’s quite important!) for the boomerang was set at an amazing 121 metres. Good on ‘y mate!

A bevy of birthday talent was born on this day starting with John le Mesurier (1912 – 1983), the well loved gentle actor best known for his character Sergeant Arthur Wilson in “Dad’s Army”.

Gregory Peck (1916 – 2003) is our next birthday celebrity. With a prolific number of films to his credit, he was the glamour boy of the 50’s and 60’s receiving an Oscar for his performance in “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

The other stalwart of this era celebrating his birthday on this day was Arthur Hailey (1920 – 2004). Amongst his many books, “Hotel”, “Airport”, “Wheels” and “Moneychangers” are my favourites.

Our final birthday guest is Agnetha Faltskog (1950) the blond singer from ABBA and we hope she doesn’t meet her “Waterloo” at her birthday bash today!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

16 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Paper White

Gemstone of the Month: Turquoise

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Following the defeat of the Royalists and the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell was sworn in as the English “Lord Protector” on this day in 1653. In this position he received the princely sum of £100,000 a year which isn’t a bad little earner even today! Goodness knows how much that would convert to at today’s values! He was soon very happy to be referred to as His Royal Highness and thankfully only lasted a few years in his position up to his death in 1658. He would eventually be succeeded by Charles II and England would return to a monarchy. In a futile effort to show their dislike of the “Protector” his body was dug up in 1661 and subjected to a posthumous execution! They really didn’t like him!

It was on this day in 1915 the Albert Einstein published his “General Theory of Relativity”. Nomanda has to admit that he has serious brain problems understanding some of the stuff that goes on in Star Trek and Stargate so I’ve got no chance with this one! Just a mention of the time space continuum and I’m lost! For those of you with greater intellectual talents you can always google your way to the theory and further enlightenment!

The legendary Australian cricketer Don Bradman enjoyed this day in the past. He made his 1st class debut playing for NSW vs. South Australia on this day in 1915. He scored 143 runs in a match between the same two sides in 1927, and in the same fixture a year later in 1939 he made 251 not out! Not at all Brad!

Two pop icons of the ‘60’s were slogging it out on this day in 1966 when the Jimi Hendrix Experience released its first single “Hey Joe”, and the Beatles released “It’s Christmas Everywhere”!

Short of friends on this day in 1997 President Clinton chose this day to call his pet Labrador “Buddy”! No matter how pleased Hilary was to see the old man when he got back home after a hard day at the office I bet that “Buddy” was even more pleased to see him! No-one gives you a welcome back better than a dog!

Catherine of Aragon
(1485 – 1536) the first wife of Henry VIII is our first birthday celebrity today. She may have lost her husband but at least she died from natural causes, unlike most of Henry’s other wives.

The playwright, actor singer and shirt lifter Noel Coward (1899 – 1973) is our next birthday guest. His final years were spent in Jamaica where he had the “Flemings” as his next door neighbours. Apparently he didn’t get on too well with his illustrious neighbours because when asked to play the part of the villain Dr No in the first “James Bond” film his reply was, “Dr No? No! No! No!"

Benny Andersson
(1946) the singer from the group ABBA is our next starring guest! Here’s one of Nomanda’s all time ABBA favourites!

The Barbados bowler “BigJoel Garner (1953) is our final birthday boy today. Standing an impressive 6’ 8” he was a formidable sight to un-nerve the most valiant of batsman as he ran up to the wicket to unleash the ball. Have a look at these clips.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!
