Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Spreading a little light in the darkness today in 1827 was John Walker who sold his first wooden match to local solicitor Mr Hixon. Sadly he made little money from his invention and it was left to Samuel Jones to cash in on the match which he called the “Lucifer”. I remember the words from the WWI song;

As long as I’ve a Lucifer to light my fag, smile boys that’s the way

Lighting up the world in a different way it was on this day in 1902 that the Texas Oil Company (Texaco) was formed.

And bringing stars to her husband’s eyes today in 1920 Mrs Mussolini biffed her husband on the nose and broke it! I wonder what he’d done to deserve it, there could be countless reasons, and I’m sure he learned the lesson that it doesn’t pay to mess about with fiery tempered Irish women!

Today in 1932 saw the end of prohibition in the US with Utah ratifying the 21st Amendment. Despite this it was apparently a “slow day” in many now official drinking places proving that it’s just not as good when you’re allowed to do it!

In a feat of abbreviations the UN formed the WHO today in 1948.

And in a case of too little too late it was today in 1994 that the Vatican eventually got around to acknowledging the holocaust just 50 years after the event.

If you like corn flakes, daffodils and stupid waiters then you’ll love today’s birthday boys.

First up is William Wordsworth (1770 – 1850) the renowned poet from the Lake District who wrote of “The Daffodils”.

A flaky Happy Birthday to W K Kellogg who was born on this day in 1860 and changed the breakfast habits of the world.

Also born on this day in 1930 was Andrew Sachs the battered and beleaguered waiter in the service of Basil Fawlty. Despite all the maltreatment handed out by Basil to “Manuel”, he still loved his employer so much that he named his pet hamster after his boss! In fact Andrew was born in Berlin and not Barcelona as most of us thought, and in a beautiful name change for political correctness when “Fawlty Towers” was shown on Spanish TV the waiter changed his name from Manuel to Paolo and came from Italy! (you choose a clip, please, x)

Hello, Good Evening and Welcome” is the trademark introduction phrase by one of our birthday boys today, David Frost (1939). His satirical show of the 1960’s (TW3) brightened up many people’s lives and we wish him a very Happy Birthday today!

Our birthday girl today is Beverly Peele (1975), super model and cover girl on most of the top fashion magazines including Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Elle.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
