First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today was a happy day over the years for lovers of Mickey Mouse, Big Macs (as opposed to Big Micks!) and diabetes sufferers.

Today in 1922 Messrs Banting, MacLeod and Best discovered insulin, and just one year later to the day in 1923 it became generally available for diabetes sufferers. Good News!

In a bizarre attempt to be the first to do something unusual it was today in 1931 that heralded the first backward walk across America. This event no doubt was responsible for a couple of songs to come along later. “Walking back to Happiness” by Helen Shapiro must have been inspired by this event. And I would not bet against the words from the rusty old nail voice of Lee Marvin singing, “I’ve never seen a sight that doesn’t look better looking back” being similarly attributed.

Fatties everywhere will celebrate this day in 1955 when Ray Kroe, not renowned for his dietary skills, opened his first McDonalds fast food restaurant in Illinois. If you haven’t had a Big Mack and fries you haven’t lived! Or at least won’t very long if you eat too many!

In what may have been just a co-incidence it was on this day in 1959 that Fidel Castro began his first US goodwill tour, and on the very same day, John Foster Dulles, the US Secretary of State, resigned!

On this day in 1973 the first Walt Disney store opened and just 10 years later to the day Tokyo Disneyland opened for business.

Birthday greeting and memories today go first of all to Leonardo Da Vinci (1452 – 1519), painter, sculptor, scientist and inventor to name just a few of his talents. He’s one of our favourites!

Sir Adrian Cadbury, from the well known chocolate and soft drinks family was born on this day in 1929. Still going strong despite all those chocolates!

Sharing his birthday on this day in 1940 is the renowned politician; author and ex con Jeffrey Archer. Like some of his books but not all of his behaviour!

The bevy of female talent sharing this day as their birthday include Claudia Cardinale (1939), best known for her performances in “The Pink Panther” and “Once upon a Time in the West”; Emma Thompson (1959) whose performances in Henry V and Howard’s End are amongst her best; and finally Samantha Fox, the well known page three girl and singer and who apparently lives, or used to live, in the same street as Margaret Thatcher!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
