Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The 9th of March over the years has had its Happy and Special Day moments as well as one or two more bizarre ones!

It was only a couple of days ago, back in 1530, that Henry VIII organised his divorce procedures for what was to be the first in a long line of what I suppose could best be euphemistically described as unsuccessful marriages.

All I can say is that he was fortunate not to be around in Naples a few years later, in 1562, where apparently kissing in public had got to such a distasteful level that a law was passed banning it. The public were sufficiently motivated to observe this law as the punishment was death! I guess that “heavy petting” was OK as long as you weren’t caught kissing!

Kissing was in the air this day in 1796 when one Napoleon Bonaparte married Josephine de Beauharnais. Rightly or wrongly Josephine seems to have got the reputation of being a very demanding lover or how else would we have got the expression “Not tonight, Josephine”?

It was some years later that an invention to resist over amorous advances was patented because we had to wait until 1882 on this day when the patent for false teeth was registered. Wearers of this product have been hissing ever since!

However there is one product that made its debut on this day in 1959 and has brought happy days to countless millions of young girls. The famous doll “Barbie” was introduced to the world on 8th March 1959. Sales are reputed to have exceeded
800 million since her introduction. The only girl in the world I know who was not the proud owner of a “Barbie” doll is our very own Nomanda who was given a “Midge” instead. What were her grandparents thinking about?

One bedraggled Japanese soldier, Hiroo Onoda, celebrated this day in 1974 when someone in the Philippines eventually managed to get through to him and tell him that WWII was over ……. And he surrendered! It begs the question just what did he think was going on for the last 29 years?

Our first birthday celebrity today is Yuri Gagarin (1934 – 1968), the first man in space on the Vostok I

Next up for birthday honours is Bobby Fischer (1943- 2008) the first American chess champion.

I hope our next birthday boy, Robin Trower (1945) from the group Procol Harum will be careful with the drinks he serves his party guests today. After all we don’t want them going a “Whiter Shade of Pale” now do we!

Our last birthday wishes go to the lovely French actress Juliette Binoche (1964) who won an Oscar for her performance in the film the “English Patient”.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
