First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Nomanda reminds all of our readers of a superstitious nature that today is a Friday 13th so don’t go walking underneath ladders or stepping on pavement cracks and you’ll probably be OK!

If it’s cold where you are and you put on a pair of ear muffs to keep warm when you go out then spare a thought for the guy who patented them, Chester Greenwood of Maine on this day in 1887. People patent the most stupid things, sometimes!

Not so the guy who invented the horse racing starting gate on this day in 1894, the Englishman J L Johnson. It has been in great demand over the last few days at the Cheltenham Races!

I know that it’s a while ago but General Motors reported a record profit of $656,434,232 on this day in 1950. Today they are asking the American taxpayer for billions to keep production going! It may turn out to be a case of going, going, gone!

The answer to the production manager’s dream “Eight Days a Week” was recorded by the Beatles on this day in 1965. If we are going to have an eight day week then Nomanda votes for 2 x Fridays, or “Poet’s Day” as Friday is sometimes called!

The record beating indoor cyclist, Michael Secrest just needs 24 hours to do his stuff! On this day in 1985 he began his 24 hour ride completing 516 miles, and he went the extra mile or so on 23rd October 2006 clocking up 534 miles!

Charles Earl Grey (1764 – 1845) is our first birthday celebrity today. Probably now better known for the blend of tea that carries his name Earl Grey was a Whig politician and was the Prime Minister of England from 1830-1834. As I said, better known for his tea!

The English giant, Daniel Lambert (1770 – 1809) is our next birthday celebrity. He weighed out at 334 kgs when he died but was not without a sense of humour during his short life. The story goes that he enjoyed the odd pint or two of ale and would often challenge visitors to a race to another pub. All he asked for was a head start. His home town of Stamford had many narrow alleys that short cut the main roads and once our friendly giant was in front no-one could pass him! Smart beer drinking guy!

Neil Sedaka was born this day in 1939 and I hope he has a quiet birthday bash with his friends as “Breaking up is Hard to do”!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
