First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is a very Happy Special Day for Nomanda because it is the first anniversary of our Happy Special Day blog! That’s right, folks, every day now for a year whatever the weather, whatever the circumstances Nomanda has produced a unique special daily blog for the enjoyment and entertainment of our faithful readers. We hope you will continue to enjoy it as long as we continue to write it!

There may be some of you who find the whole thing so boring that you just fall asleep at your computer reading our daily offering. Well, you would be in good company as on this day in 1646 the drowsy Roger Scott was tried in court for sleeping in church! I feel sorry for poor old Roger and blame it all on the vicar for not being able to keep his congegation awake during the service. It’s time for the preachers to up their game and keep their flock stimulated!

Choices in life can sometimes be difficult. Whatever choice you make seems to have undesirable consequences and it’s just impossible to make the right decision. Spare a thought for the free blacks of Arkansas who on this day in 1859 were given the choice of either exile from the state, or, wait for it, going back into slavery! When the dice are loaded there’s just nothing you can do about it!

The Dutch police were very happy on this day in 1990 when they seized 3,000 kilos of cocaine. I bet they giggled all the way back to the police station! The only guy not too happy I guess was the owner of the stuff!

I know there are a lot of people who don’t like smoking. Nomanda isn’t one, by the way, and on this day in 1997 anybody wanting to purchase a packet of cigarettes in the US had to be able to prove that they were over the age of 18. Now that’s all well and good but there are some over zealous people out there who take things a bit too far when asking for proof of age! For example we were visiting Boston recently and after we’d had a very pleasant dinner we decided to stroll around for a while and went to a bar for a coffee after our walk. Nomanda was asked to produce an identity card / passport to prove that he was over 21. Nomanda has steely grey hair, OK white if you insist, and is sadly many years past his 21st! My appearance wasn’t good enough for the guy on the door who insisted on an identity card. We said that even though we couldn’t prove my age all we wanted was a non-alcoholic cup of coffee anyway! Not good enough for the establishment’s custodian who retorted how was he to know that we wouldn’t have an alcoholic drink after our coffee! We walked back to our hotel speechless and coffee less!

Cindy Wilson
(1957) from the rock group B-52's is our first birthday celebrity today and I’m sure we’d get a cup of coffee at her “Love Shack”!

The retired Irish featherweight boxing champion Barry McGuigan (1961) is our next birthday guest today. In his 35 professional fights has won 32 and of those he won 28 by a KO! That’s fierce stuff from a featherweight!

Our final birthday greetings go to the lovely model and actress Ali Larter (1976) who we understand is “Legally Blond”! Congratulations!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
