Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Flying pigs are so rare as to be virtually unknown! Nomanda is sure that the first flying pig will be highly valued and if it ever came onto the market would sell for an extremely high price indeed. I’m not sure what the talents were of the pig that was sold on this day in Stamford, Texas in 1979 for the porkly price of $42,500, but they must have been snorting! Nevertheless, as with all these things there was another pig called “Myrna” that would knock the chops off the poor old Texan pig! “Myrna” was a French little piggy that had an amazing talent for sniffing out truffles and usually found 10 kilos a year of them for her delighted French owner who sold the delicacies for $15,000 per kilo. Her owner was so fond of his pig and her rooting abilities that he had her insured for $150,000. When at the age of 15 she snuffed her last truffle the insurance company paid the bereaved owner $150,000! I will never look at a piece of pork in the same way again!

Appearing of Tony Blair’s first honours list the evergreen Elton John picked up his knighthood on this day in 1998. He is one of the most successful artists of all time having sold over 200 million records over his 40 year career. He’s earned a lot but also knows how to party and spend a lot! However some of it has stuck and I’m sure he will continue to enjoy his lavish lifestyle for many years to come!

After the best part of 50 years in office as first the prime minister and later President of Cuba Fidel Castro eventually handed over the reins of office on this day in 2008. The job would stay in the family as his brother Raul Castro was unanimously elected to the vacant position! Nice work if you can get it!

Our first birthday celebrity today in the French music composer, arranger, pianist and conductor Michel Legrand (1932). One of his best known compositions “Windmills of Your Mind” was used for the opening credits of the film “The Thomas Crown Affair”.

The tallest professional basket ball player, Tom Burleson (1952) measuring 7’2” is our next birthday celebrity. His coaches persuaded him to declare his height at 7’4” in order to make his claim to fame! Tom accepted the proposal although he didn’t agree with it. All I can say is that he’d be a handy guy to have around when the light bulbs need changing!

Our final birthday greetings go to the Australian professional tennis star, Lleyton Hewitt (1981). At the age of 20 in 2001 he became the youngest player to be ranked the world #1 and held that position for a further 75 weeks. He’s earned a few bob out of the game and long may it continue! Cheers, Lleyton!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
