First of all Nomanda would like to thank all our new readers! We have been getting more and more of you every day and we really appreciate you! If you are enjoying Nomanda’s blog please pass it on to your friends. And if you would like to make a comment or get your own special mention on your own special day just send us the details through the comments section and we’ll make sure we don’t forget you!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

It was just a few days ago when we were celebrating the opening of the first public toilet for men that opened on 2nd February 1852 in Fleet Street, London. It was situated next to the Society of Art (I presume that’s with a silent “f”!). Not to be outdone the first public toilet for women opened just a few days later on this day in 1852 and was located in Bedford Street, London. Thighs of relief all round!

Jumping for joy at his performance on this day in 1941 was the orchestra leader Glen Miller who became the first person to receive a golden record presented to him for his rendition of the “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. It’s still a great tune, even in black and white!

Nomanda likes a bit of crustacean but I’m not sure I could have eaten a whole one of the lobster caught off Nova Scotia on this day in 1977 clawing its way onto the scales at a massive 20.2 kilos! That’s nearly as heavy as our dog! I don’t envy the waiter dipping his tongs into the aquarium to withdraw the beast for cooking. He may have put up a bit of a fight!

When you are the President of the USA I guess that it’s a tricky job picking the right guy for your vice president. You don’t want someone who may be better at the job than you are and make you look stupid, and you don’t want someone who shoots your one of your campaign funders either! Well our good old friend ex-President Bush got it half right when he chose Dick Cheney. Dick stayed pretty much in the background until this day in 2006 when in a hunting accident he shot one of his friends and campaign contributor, 78 year old lawyer Harry Whittington. Happily Harry recovered from the 200 pellets lodged in his body and has given up the sport for the time being!

Our first birthday celebrity today is Samuel Plimsoll (1824 – 1898) who did not invent the tennis shoe / trainers but was responsible for a line drawn on ships to prevent them being overloaded with cargo. The line became known as the “Plimsoll Line”.

Our next birthday celebrity is Robert Wagner (1930). In a career spanning best part of 60 years he’s done it all and he’ll always be Nomanda’s Number 2!

The Scotsman who likes a bit of saffron to liven up his dinner, Donavan (1946) is getting a bit “Mellow Yellow” these days but it’s still a great song!

The Australian “Great White Shark”, Greg Norman (1955) is our next birthday boy. Despite the fact that he’s only won two majors, the Open in 1986 and 1993, he is one of the best golfers of his generation and a gentleman to boot!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
