Gemstone of the Month

Garnet

Flower of the Month: Carnation

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

It was a sad day for Francophiles on this day in 1558 when England’s last French possession, Calais, was re-taken by the French. However to the local Frenchman living in Calais it probably seems as though the Brits have never left the place. They continue to turn up off the ferry in their thousands driving their ubiquitous “white van” which they stuff full of cheap “continental” booze and fags! I guess that 50% of the English who visit Calais don’t go further or find out any more about Calais and France than the local Mamouth supermarket! And we wonder why we have an international reputation as a nation of uncontrolled yobs and hooligans! Strange really!

Sloppy Italian workmanship, that’s what Nomanda thinks about the leaning Tower of Pisa that was closed to the public on this day in 1990 for safety reasons. The poor local inhabitants who lived in the shadow of the lean so to speak were ordered to leave their homes in case the thing fell on them. It took just 10 years to put the job right, no doubt employing decent British engineers and builders, and the Tower was once again opened to the public on 15th December 2001 who was told that it would be stable for at least another 300 years. Well done, it should never have leaned in the first place! However if it hadn’t who would have ever heard of Pisa?

It’s nice when things go down in price and in today’s world it seems that whatever is the latest hi-tech gimmick today that costs a fortune it will be available for a fraction of the price in a few years time. You just have to be patient until it falls into your budget! So it is with the video telephone released on this day in 1992 by AT&T at the extravagant price of $1,499. Nomanda has recently just got one of these as a present and I’m pretty sure it didn’t cost anything like that! OK it’s not really a video telephone, it’s a web cam, but it does the same thing, more or less! Don’t know yet because I need to get it working!

I don’t want to appear petulant but today is a pretty crummy day for birthday celebrities which is why Nicholas Cage (1964) gets a mention! He’s not one of Nomanda’s favourites and he’s the only one I can find worth a greeting!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
