When it is your happy special day and whether you are celebrating a birthday or special anniversary, if you would like a mention on Nomanda’s blog just send us the details. We promise you a very special mention on this blog on your special day!

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

It’s a bit sad when a benevolent Arab offers you a gift in the hope of improving commercial relations and no-one seems keen to take up the offer. So it was with not just one but in fact with both of “Cleopatra’s Needles” that were offered to both the UK and USA respectively. This day in 1881 marks the anniversary of the erection in Central Park of the one offered to the USA. It was first offered in 1869, formally accepted in 1879 and eventually put in the place it now stands in 1881! It stands 21 metres high and weighs in at around 180 tons and is quite an impressive sight!

An equally impressive sight must have been the world’s largest cheese! Now Nomanda likes a bit of cheese but I’m not sure I could have managed to nibble my way through all 15,723 kilos of the one manufactured in Wisconsin and on display on this day in 1964. The Needle still stands, the cheese has long gone but I’m sure the smiles remain!

What do you do if you are a top sportsman but the youngsters coming into the game are running away with all the prizes, money and glamour? Answer, invent yourself a “Seniors Tour”, carry on playing and cut out the new kids on the block by telling them they are too young to play on your tour! A brilliant idea that was taken up by the PGA on this day in 1980 and all the old fans delight in following all their old heroes! Long may it continue!

The short lived romantic poet and revolutionary Lord Byron (1788 – 1824) is our first birthday celebrity today. He was famously described by Lady Caroline Lamb as “Mad, bad, and dangerous to know”. That’s enough to get him onto Nomanda’s blog!

Our final birthday celebrity is the guitarist from the country music group Alabama, Teddy Gentry (1952). I have to admit that some of their crooning is not quite to Nomanda’s taste but I love the song written for his daughter after the end of her first birthday party.

Words and Music by Teddy Gentry

Drift off and dream in your paper-doll world.
Play with the presents from the boys and the girls.
You big day is over.
The cake is all gone.

We sang you to sleep with the birthday song.

Chorus: No. you'll never be one again.
The two's are tumbling on in.

Daddy's little girl is growing up in the world.
You'll never be one again.

The toy piano is quiet in the hall as Kermie the frog sits watching it all.
And soon your legs will grow and make the tricycle go and take you away from us All.

Chorus
Goodnight, Baby. Goodnight, Daddy.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
