13 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Turquoise

Flower of the Month: Paper White

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The “Rebel Without a Cause”, James Dean began his career on this day in 1950 by making a Pepsi commercial. He would go on to make just three films, “Rebel Without a Cause”, “East of Eden” and “Giant”. His performances in these films and his untimely death in a motor accident at the age of just 24 would make him an American icon. Have a look at this clip and you’ll see why!

One of Nomanda’s favourite male macho songs “Big Bad John” sung by Jimmy Dean became the first record to reach the $1 million sale mark on this day in 1961.

Big Brian Epstein signed his name into the history books on this day in 1963 when he signed up to manage the Beatles and at the same time gave Capitol Records the right of first refusal on the Beatles work. Smart move for one and all!

It was in an exercise of complete overkill in 1969 that John Sinclair was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for selling 2 marijuana joints to an undercover police officer. How sneaky is that! However on this day in 1971 the “Free John Now” rally took place that secured his release just three days later! The “Hash Bash” to get the weed legalised goes on to this day.

Nomanda is always impressed at feats of imagination and endurance and so the completion on this day in 1988 of visiting all 466 New York City subway stations deserves a mention! It took the three likely lads who undertook the exercise 3 days to complete and Nomanda hopes they had enough time to enjoy the fast food delights on offer!

The festive season is almost upon us and so it is appropriate that the American clergyman Phillips Brooks (1835 – 1893) should be celebrated today as he wrote the popular Christmas Carol “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem”. Many have sung it and Elvis’ version is one of Nomanda’s favourites.

The singer and comedian Jamie Foxx (1967) will be amusing and entertaining his friends at his birthday bash today. I wonder if he’ll turn up in a tennis ball!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
