11 December - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month
Turquoise

Flower of the Month: Paper White

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

First of all our dog “Boule” would like to thank all the doggie friends who commented on his recent blog on 8th December. He wants you all to know that he wrote the blog with his tongue in his jowl and that he and his owners never miss an episode of Cesar Millan the “Dog Whisperer” and try to follow most of his advice and techniques! Boule is delighted to have made so many more doggie friends!

The Welshman speaking English as his second language, his first being Welsh, David Lloyd George formed his war government on this day in 1916. He is the only Welshman to have held the office of Prime Minister of the UK and the last Liberal leader to have held that office. Nick Clegg take note! Despite his Welsh background and illustrious position, “Lloyd George knew my father, Father knew Lloyd George”! For those who don’t know the song the full lyrics are above and are sung ad infinitum to the tune of “Onward Christian Soldiers”! Have a go with your mates after a couple of beers; it’s all good innocent fun!

Opting for Mrs Simpson’s bedroom as opposed to the throne room it was on this day in 1936 that King Edward VIII abdicated and passed the baton on to his brother Albert who became King George VI. Wallis Simpson was disliked by the British establishment who thought her a gold digger but she proved them all wrong and the couple stayed married for 35 years until the death of Edward.

Elvis
’ album “Blue Hawaii” went to the #1spot on this day in 1961 and stayed there for a further 20 weeks. Here’s one of Nomanda’s favourites!

Not to be out done the Marvelettes, don’t those ‘60’s group names get your juices going, released “Please, Mr Postman” on the same day. These days the postman is becoming a thing of the past as we all log on to pick up our latest emails and all the joy they bring every day!

A few years later on this day in 1967 the Beatles Company Apple Music signed up their first group called Grapefruit. It all sounds like the breakfast fruit juices to me!

I am amazed to learn that Geoff Boycott, one of the most boring batsmen of the English cricket team, on this day in 1979 actually managed to score a century in a limited overs International match. Normally he would just occupy at the crease for hours without scoring more than a handful of runs and boring both the opposition and spectators into submission! He was a “grafter” and despite my comments above ended his test career with a very respectable batting average.

Our first birthday boy today is Carlo Ponti (1913 – 2007) the Italian film producer and twice times husband of the lovely Sophia Loren.

I don’t want to have to say “I’m Sorry” for missing out Brenda Lee (1944) from our birthday honours. She has the distinction of having had the Beatles as her opening act on one of her UK tours in the early ‘60’s before they became famous! Great taste, Brenda!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
