30 November - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Chrysanthemum

Gemstone of the Month: Topaz

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Nomanda isn’t a rocket scientist and therefore any observations I may have on rockets, satellites and other flying objects are strictly layman’s opinions! However I do feel sorry for the rocket scientists of the USSR who on this day in 1964 launched the Zond 2 spacecraft and sent it in its way to Mars for a fly past. Apparently they lost communications with the craft in May 1965 during some manoeuvring exercises. It did “fly past” the planet a few months later in August but missed the target by around 1,500 kilometres never to be seen or heard from again! Still it was early days in the space business and things would get better!

Celebrating all the way to the bank the former Czech tennis player Ivan “the terrible” Lendl became the first professional player to earn $10 million dollars on this day in 1986. By the time he reached the end of his career he would more than double that amount! Quite right too, after all he’s given pleasure to loads of fans and it’s only a fraction of what the top footballers earn these days! Pay them more, pay them as much as they want is what Nomanda believes!

The top lady footballers turned out for the first Women’s World Football Championship on this day in 1991 and Nomanda’s guess is that they didn’t receive a fraction of the wages of the top male players. What happened to pay equality and all that nonsense! If anyone’s interested the result of that first female battle was that the US beat Norway 2 -1.

Our first birthday celebrity is the Irishman Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) best known for his book “Gulliver’s Travels”. Now “Joey” the people of Lilliput were very little people, and I think, quite scary, so maybe you should read it!

The musical parodist Allan Sherman 1924 – 1973) is our next birthday boy. If you haven’t heard his summer camp song, “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” then here’s your chance!

The former striker for the English Football team, Gary Lineker (1960) has now hung up his boots and has changed his crisp striking to eating crisps! When he’s not on the box advertising Walkers Crisps he has a steady job as a TV sports presenter showing off both his football and golfing knowledge.

If you’ve been invited to Des’ree’s (1970) birthday bash “You Gotta Be” on time, and lots of other things as well!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
