20 September - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Aster

Gemstone of the Month: Sapphire

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

On not one of America’s more memorable days it was on this day in 1870 that the mayor of New York, William Tweed, was accused of robbing the taxpayers of the city. The total amount of money stolen has never been verified but it thought to be between $40 and $200 million, which was quite a lot of dough in those days. Eventually tried, convicted and sentenced to serve 12 years in prison, he managed to get the term reduced to just one year! Following his release he was subsequently re-arrested and put in a debtor’s prison from which he escaped and fled to Cuba. He heard that the authorities were after him in Cuba so he jumped on a boat to Spain. Not blessed with the best of luck his trip to Spain was discovered and he was arrested there on his arrival. He was returned to the US and once again found himself in the hands of the American authorities, was sent to prison where he later died. Good to know that crime sometimes doesn’t pay!

Built at a cost of just over £29 million the flagship of the Cunard line, the Queen Elizabeth II, was launched at Clydebank, Scotland on this day in 1967. The luxury liner has sailed all over the world and is planned to be retired from service later this year when she will be berthed at Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, and become a luxury floating hotel. I doubt if Nomanda will ever sail or stay on her!

For all our sweet toothed fans the Archies' “Sugar, Sugar” hit the #1 spot on this day in 1969.

On this day in 1985 Walt Disney World received its 200 millionth “guest”. I like the use of the word “guest” it just sounds so much better than punter or customer. Nomanda has visited this wonderful world and paid for the privilege like everybody else, but it’s nice to know that I was not alone!

A couple oldies but goodies from the screen share their birthday today. Kenneth More (1914 – 1982) and Sophia Loren (1934) and still going strong.

The Panozzo twins
, Chuck and John, founders of the group Styx, were born on this day in 1948. They “Didn’t want to let it End” so we won’t!

Another musical pair of twins was also born on this day in 1967, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. They “Can’t Live Without Your Love and Affection” so I guess we ought to play something for them!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
