5 August - Historical Events and Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Agate

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Getting ready for your holidays? Got your passport? Got your tickets? Got your driving licence? Don’t forget the traveller’s cheques that were first issued by American Express on this day in 1891. Of course these bits of paper that may or may not be cashed in were a great source of revenue for the poor old bankers who didn’t have to pay their customers any interest on them! These days the traveller’s cheque has been effectively replaced by credit cards. Good!

Someone who I don’t think has ever had a traveller’s cheque much less a credit card in his life is the great Northern cartoon character Andy Capp who made his debut on this day in 1957. Created by Reginald Smythe Andy has become politically correct over the years. Originally always portrayed with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, apparently he’s now stopped smoking! He no longer fights with his long suffering wife Florrie who used to better him most of the time from my memory! He’ll be getting a job and giving up drinking next! Not much fun in that! He will cease being funny and drink to the level of the rest of us!

August 5th seems to have been a popular day for the Beatles as it was on this day in 1965 they recorded “Leave My Kitten Alone” and a year later their “Revolver” album was released. On the same day in 1965 in a statement that was probably more intended to shock than offend John Lennon declared that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Maybe of course he was right!

A great day for music as it was on this day in 1972 that the Moody Blues released “Nights in White Satin” and in 1975 Stevie Wonder signed himself a nice little contract with Motown for $13 million. Not bad for a poor boy!

Birthday celebrities start with the famous French priest Abbé Pierre (1912 – 2007) the man who worked all his life to help the poor and destitute of France. Nomanda, when he was a student, worked as a volunteer in Lyon for the great man and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Abbé Pierre was voted the most popular man in France for many years up to 2003 when he came second to Zinédine Zidane! Changing values!

Neil Armstrong (1930) must get a birthday wish for his moon walk years before Michael Jackson thought of it!

And Rick Huxley (1942) will be “Glad All Over” having a beer with his mates from the Dave Clark Five!

I hope that Terri Clark (1968) has a good shower and clean up in preparation for her birthday bash because as she freely admits she can sometimes be a “Dirty Girl”! Dirty but nice!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
