21 August - Historical Events and Special Celebrations

Gemstone of the Month

Agate

Flower of the Month: Gladiolus

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Now you would think that the guy who patented the venetian blind may have had some association with Venice or at least Italy. Well you would be wrong because John Hampton who patented the venetian blind on this day in 1841 came from New Orleans! For those of us who have had these dust collecting devices in our time we would have loved him to have patented an easy way to clean them as well! They look great for the first couple of weeks and after that they look disgraceful unless you spend an hour every week cleaning the damm things!

Another outmoded device patented on this day in 1888 by William Burroughs was the adding machine. Nomanda has used one of these antique machines in the distant past and frankly it was quicker to do the arithmetic mentally than work the cumbersome device! Doesn’t matter any more as we now all have Excel! Wonderful program!

The evergreen female singer Linda Ronstadt strayed a little away from her normal genre when she appeared in “The Pirates of Penzance” on Broadway on this day in 1980. Let’s hear one of her better known songs!

One of Nomanda’s favourites “BeefyBotham celebrated this day in 1986 by taking his world record 365th Test wicket. He is still the top English wicket taker. Well done, “Beefy”! He was quite handy with the bat as well, have a look at the treatment he deals out to Merv Hughes.

Our first birthday celebrity is the renowned jazz musician, Count Basie (1904 – 1984). A great Orchestra, a great man. Check this out!

“What the World Needs Now” are more singers like Jackie DeShannon (1944). Let’s hear from her!

Our final birthday wishes go to the actress Hayden Panettiere (1988). She may only have “One Life to Live” but as she started working at the age of 5 months she will pack a lot into it!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
