2 August - Notable Events and Celebrations

Flower of the Month

Gladiolus

Gemstone of the Month: Agate

Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

The roller skate has come a long way from this day in 1875 when the world’s first roller skating rink was opened in London. I must admit that Nomanda’s first few skating experiences were a bit scary, I just couldn’t seem to get the right rhythm going and the harder I tried the slower I went! I am reminded of Chandler in a “Friends” episode when he was trying to become an advertising executive writing the copy for a hot new pair of inline skates that Joey loved so much he would pay anything for them!

Not for adults” was the copy line as he limped out of the room!

Nobody like taxes and governments have been really inventive over the years in devising ways of extracting cash from the hard working tax payer. However no tax can be as sinister as the Death Duty tax that was introduced into the UK on this day in 1894. We all die sometime and when we do it is of no comfort to know as our time comes that the tax man is waiting in the wings to take his slice. Is there no escape?

A couple of days ago we celebrated Harry Drake shooting his way in to the record books with a foot bow sending his arrow some 1873 metres and on this day in 1987 Don Brown using a conventional hand bow managed to send an arrow a very respectable 1336 yards. Great shooting to you both!

Our first birthday wishes go to the Irish actor Peter O’Toole (1932). One of the best actors of his generation with his portrayal of T E Lawrence in “Lawrence of Arabia” and his Henry II in both “Beckett” and the “Lion in Winter” being his best remembered roles. Have a look at this! He knows how to party and I’m sure will not hold back today!

Our next birthday boy is Pete de Freitas (1961 - 1989) the drummer of the group Echo and the Bunnymen. Good music!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
