Happy Special16th July Day!

Gemstone of the Month

Ruby

Flower of the Month: Larkspur

According to the record books it was on this day in 1439 that kissing was banned in England. The reason given for the ban was to stop the spreading of germs! First of all Nomanda isn’t too sure how much they knew about germs and the spreading thereof in the 15th century, and I’m pretty sure more progress in the prevention of the spreading of germs would have been achieved if they’d all washed and cleaned up a bit more than once in a while! Spoilsports the lot of them! I understand that the ban has now been lifted so have a happy germ spreading day!

If you are the sort of person who gets a thrill out of ready mixed paint and reinforced concrete (I know some people who do!) then you would have been beside yourself with joy on this day in 1867 when D R Averill got his paint box out and Joseph Monier started sticking metal rods into the grey goo. Happy Days!

J D Salinger published his acclaimed novel “Catcher in the Rye” on this day in 1951. It’s the sort of story you either get into straight away or never. Nomanda never did!

Our old friend Charles de Gaulle was in the limelight once again on this day in 1965 when with the Italian president Giuseppe Saragat they inaugurated the Mont Blanc road tunnel. The tunnel opened to traffic a couple of days later and around one third of Italy’s exports to Northern Europe pass through it. That’s why there’s so much spaghetti now!

Going into the simultaneous plate spinning record books on this day in 1982 was Shukuni Sasaki who achieved a very respectable 72 without dropping, falling or breaking. Sadly there’s always someone else coming up behind who is out to do better and the current world record of SPS is an amazing 108 performed by David Spathaky and his assistant Debbie Wooley (isn’t that cheating, who cares!) on Thailand TV live from Bangkok in 1996. And it doesn’t get much better than that!

Proving to the world that he was better at recruiting followers than filling out tax returns Sun Myung Moon was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for tax fraud on this day in 1982. Did anyone consider the rich pickings for him in his new abode?

One of the singing trios of our generation, the Three Tenors, Domingo, Pavarotti and Carreras performed at Los Angeles on this day in 1994. Just Brilliant!

The girl who made Luton Airport famous, Lorraine Chase (1951) will be having a knees up today on some exotic island no doubt!

Lorraine may require a bit of security at her birthday bash so why not give Stewart Copeland (1952), the talented drummer from the “Police” a call. He will enjoy the drum sticks and bread rolls and may even play a bit!

Our final birthday wishes go to the girl with the name for the job, Anna Smashnova (1976), the tennis star from Russia. She just loves knocking them back, so remember, Anna, drink responsibly!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!

No, it wasn't cheating. Debbie handed me the plates and I did all the spinning myself. :-)

All the best
