Upcoming Special Days

14 July - Emmeline Pankhurst Day

15 July - St. Swithin’s Day

One boxer knocking his opponent out in a boxing match is pretty much what the sport is all about so the KO that occurred on this day in 1889 when John L Sullivan KO’d Jake Kilrain wouldn’t normally have attracted Nomanda’s interest except for a couple of other interesting facts. The first one being that the KO happened in the last bare-knuckle fight and the other is that the KO came in the 75th round of the match! Nomanda isn’t much of a pugilist but I’ve been in a few scrapes in my time and can tell you that the activity is physically draining. To stand up and swap punches for 75 rounds is beyond belief, but true!

Another activity Nomanda hasn’t a great deal of experience of is climbing mountains and I’ve certainly never even dreamed of having a go at Mount Everest. Lots of other people have conquered this mountain following in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary who was the first to reach the summit in 1953. However it was on this day in 1978 that mountaineers Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler became the first to reach the summit without using additional oxygen. I bet the view from the top was breathtaking!

Another feat of extraordinary endurance occurred on this day in 1977 when Sabra Starr finished the longest recorded belly dance! Apparently she was at it for an incredible 100 hours and I’m sure had a welcome cup of tea when she stopped! The mind belly boggles!

The model presenter of “The Price is Right” and playmate Janice Pennington gets a birthday mention today (1942) not because of her charm and personality but because of her putting skills! Have a look at her “Hole in One” put and you’ll want her as your next mixed gruesomes partner!

To be a successful singer you don’t necessarily need to be pop, rock or even classic. Carving out a niche in the children’s singing market Raffi (1948) will be celebrating his birthday today. His rendition of “Baby Beluga” may not be to everybody’s taste but it’s a living I guess!

Much more to Nomanda’s taste Anjelica Huston (1951) will be having her birthday bash today. Of the many characters she’s played, her portrayal of Morticia Addams is Nomanda’s favourite!

Andy Fletcher (1951) “Just Can’t Get Enough” so let’s see if we can find out why!

Our final birthday wishes go to the lovely actress Sophia Bush (1982) who has already won lots of nominations and awards and is best known for her character “Brooke Davis” in “One Tree Hill”.

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
