Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Well today has to be one of the happiest and most special days in Nomanda’s year as it is our very own birthday! To be strictly correct it is the birthday of the prettiest part of the Nomanda team, our one and only and best loved Manda! Lots of love to you on your special day and we’re going to have a great time celebrating your birthday! It's a milestone event and we're going to celebrate it in style!

The message for today is, “Do not mess about with rat catchers”! It was on this day in 1284, having done his job for the people of Hamelin and got rid of their rat infestation and the townspeople having reneged on their deal, that one upset rat catcher returned to the village and lured away the children of the town. The account of what happened to the children varies from them being sealed in a cave to being returned in payment for a greater sum than the original deal for getting rid of the rats. Whatever the truth of it, beware of gaudily dressed men blowing pipes. A good piece of advice even today!

At Columbus on this day in 1936 Everett Marshall beat Ali Baba to become the Wrestling Champion of the world. It was a sad day for Ali Baba who had obviously forgotten to bring along his 40 heaves!

It was on this day in 1963 that John F Kennedy gave his impassioned speech to a crowd of 120,000 in Berlin. Speaking out for freedom he said the immortal words to the gathered assembly “Ich bin ein Berliner”. Nomanda is a great fan of JFK and we all know he meant well but to this day nobody has pointed out his German grammatical gaffe. He meant to say “Ich bin Berliner!” The translation of what he actually said is “I am a Berliner”, unfortunately not a citizen of that great city, but a doughnut called a Berliner! Available at fast food places everywhere!

If he had realised his gaffe I’m sure JFK would have had “A Hard Day’s Night” the song that was released in the US on this day in 1964 by the Beatles. “Yeah! Yeah Yeah!” too, just for Nomanda!

Roger Moore, playing in his 5th James Bond role had his eyes wide open as “For Your Eyes Only” premiered in the US in this day in 1981. Hot Stuff!

It should come as no surprise that at this time of the year, at least in the northern hemisphere, the temperatures start to rise, if you’re lucky! However on this day in 1994 a few exceptional temperatures were recorded in the US; 40°C at Denver, 41.6°C at Albuquerque, 44.6 at El Paso, 50.2 at Laughlin and a staggering 52.2 in Death Valley, California. Time for a cool beer or two! Nomanda isn’t a follower of the global warming arguments. The earth has always blown hot and cold but I have to say that it was a stinker on 26 06 1994!

Sharing his birthday with Nomanda is the German aircraft designer Willy Messerschmitt (1898 – 1978). A staggering 35,000 of his model the BF 109 were produced making it the world’s most produced fighter plane ever. Political correctness restrains me from further comment!

Our final celebrity sharing his birthday with Nomanda is Georgie Fame (1943) and a listen to one of his best, the “Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde” would be rather nice!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
