Nomanda’s Happy Special Day blog is a celebration of events and anniversaries that have touched our lives. If today is your special day join us in looking at a few other events that have occurred on your day. Enjoy!

Today is a great day to celebrate for all those fans of smoking, shooting, career services personnel and admirers of the great man himself, Winston Churchill.

Personally, I always thought that Sir Walter Raleigh, that well known buccaneer of Queen Elisabeth I was the first person to introduce tobacco, along with spuds, into Europe. However I’m reliably informed that in fact it was the not so well known Francisco Fernandez in 1558, who introduced smoking tobacco into Europe. Maybe Sir Walter kept his little secret just between the Queen and her subjects and good old Francisco kept his little secret for the rest of Europe! Anyway to all those happy unreformed smokers spare a thought for these two gentlemen today. Perhaps today should be Happy European Smoking Day? After all the unconverted have their very own Non Smoking Day. Just trying to even things up a little here!

Also on this day back in 1836 one Mr Samuel Colt manufactured his first pistol which was a 34 caliber model and called the “Texas”. Other models would come along, one with the unlikely name of the “Peacemaker”!

A little later, on this day in 1946 Winston Churchill made his famous “Iron Curtain” speech. It begs the question just how well he knew his previous ally, Joseph Stalin.

On this day in 1960 there was one very happy private Presley who celebrated 5th of March in that year by completing his national service term. Rock on Elvis! Everyone else on parade “Stand Easy!”

Whilst Elvis was getting himself readjusted to “Civvy Streetthe Beatles were recording “From Me to You” on this day in 1963.

If you like milk and chocolate mixed up in a milk shake then you couldn’t do any better than be in Nelspruit, South Africa and dive into the monster 1,955 gallon one that was all shook up on this day in 1994.

Our birthday greetings today go to the American actress Jolene Blalock best known for her character “T’Pol” in the Star Trek series. She’s lovely despite being an alien!

Happy Special Day to one and all!!

If you know someone who is celebrating their birthday, anniversary or a special day today or sometime soon why not send them a nice e-card so they get it as soon as they log on! Even better, why not send this page to your friend!
Don’t know what to get for a present? Think about what your special person enjoys doing and the things they like.

For Girls, I know that flowers and chocolates are a bit cliché but nevertheless they always seem to work! Of course, if your budget stretches that far, jewellery, watches, perfume and fashion items are always appreciated!

For Boys, all boys like toys! It’s just as they get older the toys get more expensive. So gadgets and gimmicky things work. Again, if you have the budget then car accessories, sporting equipment and clothes, and man type jewellery like watches and gold chains will go down very well!

And, if all else fails, you could always send them a gift voucher and they can choose whatever they want!

If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special event today I hope you got lots of cards and presents and that there is someone special in your life who will make this day a very happy and special day for you.

Happy celebrations to you from the Happy Special Day Blog!!
